Ittai Bar-Joseph
Ittai Bar-Joseph is an Israeli photographer and artist whose work explores questions of memory, destruction, and renewal. He draws inspiration from the legacy of documentary photography, art history, archaeology, architecture, and sites where trauma reshapes collective consciousness. In his works, Bar-Joseph examines the intersection of the physical and metaphysical, history and imagination, and the intricate dynamics between human structures and the encroaching natural world.
The project Leftovers reflects his current artistic practice but has roots in earlier works such as Exterritories and Elsewheres. While Bar-Joseph’s earlier works dealt with mythical and poetic spaces rich in symbols that challenge viewers to interpret memory through subjective lenses, Leftovers takes on a denser, more layered approach. This work operates as a kind of "archaeology of memory," where visual fragments—remnants of structures, images of destruction, and erupting nature—are assembled into massive digital collages embodying layers of trauma.
Bar-Joseph does not offer solutions in his work but rather poses questions, inviting viewers to confront the gaps and contradictions of history. The images he creates are not documented memories but "invented memories," serving as symbols of the universality of destruction and renewal. Through a precise and complex visual language, his works evoke a visceral experience, leaving viewers not only questioning what has been lost but also unsettled by what remains.
Bar-Joseph, born in 1972, lives and works in Israel. He is married, a father of two, and the owner of a dog and two cats. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Photography from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem (1999). Throughout his career, Bar-Joseph has presented several solo exhibitions and participated in dozens of group exhibitions in Israel, the United States, and Europe. His work has received professional recognition and awards, including the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Prize and three finalist nominations for the Meitar Award for Excellence in Photography.

איתי בר-יוסף הוא צלם-אמן ישראלי המתמקד בשאלות של זיכרון, חורבן והתחדשות, תוך שהוא שואב השראה ממורשת הצילום התיעודי, מתולדות האמנות, מארכיאולוגיה, מארכיטקטורה וממקומות בהם הטראומה מעצבת מחדש את התודעה הקולקטיבית. בעבודותיו, בר-יוסף עוסק במפגש שבין הפיזי והמטאפיזי, בין היסטוריה לדמיון, ובוחן את הדינמיקה המורכבת שבין המבנה האנושי לטבע המגיב ומכסה.
פרויקט "שְׁאֵרִים" משקף את עשייתו האמנותית העכשווית, אך שורשיו נטועים בפרויקטים קודמים כמו "Exterritories" ו-"Elsewheres". אם ביצירות המוקדמות עסק בר-יוסף במרחבים מיתיים ופואטיים, רוויים בסמלים המאתגרים את הצופה לקרוא את הזיכרון דרך עדשות סובייקטיביות, הרי שב"שְׁאֵרִים" מתקיימת התבוננות דחוסה ומרובדת יותר. עבודה זו מתפקדת כמעין "ארכיאולוגיה של זיכרון" שבה שברים חזותיים—שברי מבנים, דימויים של חורבן וטבע מתפרץ—משולבים לכדי קולאז'ים דיגיטליים ענקיים המגלמים שכבות של טראומה.
בעבודותיו, בר-יוסף אינו מציע פתרונות אלא מציב שאלות, מזמין את הצופה לעמוד מול הפערים והסתירות של ההיסטוריה. הדימויים שהוא יוצר אינם זיכרונות מתועדים אלא "זיכרונות מומצאים", המתפקדים כסמלים לאוניברסליות של החורבן וההתחדשות. בשפה חזותית מדויקת ומורכבת, עבודותיו מייצרות חוויה ויזואלית שמותירה את הצופה לא רק עם שאלות על מה שאבד, אלא גם עם תחושת חוסר שקט על מה שנותר.
בר-יוסף, יליד 1972, מתגורר ופועל בישראל. הוא נשוי, אב לשני ילדים, ומגדל כלבה ושני חתולים. הוא בוגר תואר ראשון באמנות (BFA) בצילום מהאקדמיה לאמנות ולעיצוב בצלאל בירושלים (1999). לאורך הקריירה שלו הציג בר-יוסף מספר תערוכות יחיד והשתתף בעשרות תערוכות קבוצתיות בישראל, ארצות הברית ובאירופה. עבודותיו זכו להכרה מקצועית ופרסים, ביניהם פרס קרן התרבות אמריקה-ישראל, וכן שלוש מועמדויות לגמר פרס מיתר למצוינות בצילום.

התערוכה שפיריות מאת עפרה אייל ואיתי בר-יוסף מזמינה את הצופים לשוטט במרחבים אקס-טריטוריאליים של דמיון ואשליה. יצירותיהם, בגווני שחור, לבן ואפור, משלבות הסתרה וחשיפה. עפרה יוצרת פנורמות של יערות פנטסטיים, המאוכלסים בדמויות מיתולוגיות וקסומות, בהשראת ציור ויקטוריאני. צילומיו המבוימים של איתי מהדהדים את תולדות האמנות והצילום הוויקטוריאני, תוך הוספת הקשרים עכשוויים של הדרה ופחד. השפיריות, המרחפות מעל דמויות מתבגרות ובעלי חיים, מסמלות תהליכי שינוי והתפכחות. בעבודותיהם, שנוצרו בתקופת הקורונה, עפרה ואיתי חוקרים את הזיכרון והדמיון, ומציעים חוויות חזותיות המשלבות בין קסם למציאות כואבת.

The exhibition Dragonflies by Ophra Eyal and Ittai Bar-Joseph invites viewers to explore ex-territorial realms of imagination and illusion. Their works, rendered in shades of black, white, and gray, blend concealment and revelation. Ophra creates panoramic scenes of fantastical forests inhabited by mythological and magical figures, inspired by Victorian painting. Ittai’s staged photographs echo the history of art and Victorian photography, adding contemporary contexts of exclusion and fear. The dragonflies, hovering above adolescent figures and animals, symbolize processes of transformation and awakening. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ophra and Ittai’s works delve into memory and imagination, offering visual experiences that weave together enchantment and poignant reality.

תערוכת היחיד של איתי בר-יוסף מבוססת על גוף עבודות חדש שהתהווה בשנתיים האחרונות, ונולדה מתוך תגובה של האמן לסגרי הקורונה. עבודותיו מבוימות בקפידה עם עין רגישה, ומתכתבות עם תולדות האמנות, קולנוע, סיפורים, אגדות-עם, היסטוריות ובלדות. זירת ההתרחשות היא יער. רוב הסדרה צולמה בנחל גחר, חורשת קק"ל. אולם בצילומיו של בר-יוסף החורשה הזו עולה על גדותיה, מתנערת מניסיונות השליטה בה, והופכת ליער אירופי רחב ועמוק. אנחנו תופסות את אסופת העצים כמקום כשפים, מקום פתייני עם זרמים תת-קרקעיים אפלים הנעים בתוכו, בין עציו יסודות מאיימים שהאדם לא יכול להם. "The woods are lovely dark and deep" כותב רוברט פְרוֹסְט בשנת 1923, ומזהה את היער ככוח מהלך מסתורין שמושך בחוטי כיסופים עמוקים, תת-מודעים, אל תוך הסבך שלו, אל תוך סודותיו. חוויית הקרירות של הדפסות הענק העוטפות את קירות הגלריה, יחד עם עבודת הוידאו שיצרו יחד בר-יוסף, האמנית המקסיקנית-הולנדית אנה פריסילה רודריגז והמוסיקאי גל דהן, מכניסה את הצופה לעולמו של הנווד הרואה את הבריאה אך אינו מצליח למצוא בה מקום מפלט. העולם המתהווה בין העבודות הוא מקום פרום ונטול זמן, אי של חזיונות המועצם על ידי הסאונד הבוקע מעבודת הוידאו ואופף את חלל הגלריה. האי הזה הוא מקום מרבצם של תלי אבנים מעוטרים טחב וצמחים מטפסים, ביניהם נעות דמויות אדם ודמויות חיה סיפוריות. הדמויות משוטטות או נחות בתוך נופים גולמיים, חסרי אופק. השורשים, זרועות הענפים והעלים המתכלים על האדמה נשלחים החוצה מהקירות הגדולים, מזמינים אותנו להיבלע יחד איתם, אל תוך העולם הקודר והפנטסטי שיצר האמן.

Ittai Bar-Joseph's solo exhibition is based on a new body of work developed over the past two years, born out of the artist's response to the COVID-19 lockdowns. His meticulously staged works, crafted with a sensitive eye, engage with the history of art, cinema, folklore, legends, histories, and ballads. The central setting is the forest. Most of the series was photographed in Nahal Gahar, a JNF-planted grove. However, in Bar-Joseph's photographs, this grove overflows its boundaries, shedding attempts to control it, transforming into a vast and deep European forest. "We see the collection of trees as a place of enchantment, a seductive space with dark undercurrents running through it, between its trees lie ominous elements beyond human mastery. 'The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,' wrote Robert Frost in 1923, identifying the forest as a mysterious force pulling at the strings of subconscious yearning, drawing one into its thickets and secrets." The cool sensation of the large-scale prints enveloping the gallery walls, alongside a video work created in collaboration with Mexican-Dutch artist Ana Priscilla Rodríguez and musician Gal Dahan, immerses the viewer in the wanderer’s world—a world that witnesses creation yet finds no refuge within it. The unfolding space between the works is a frayed, timeless island of visions, amplified by the soundscape emanating from the video and filling the gallery. This island is the dwelling place of moss-draped stone mounds and climbing plants, among which human and animal-like figures wander or rest in raw, horizonless landscapes. The roots, branches, and decaying leaves extend outward from the towering walls, inviting us to be consumed alongside them, into the somber and fantastical world the artist has conjured.
